We Are Not Nature's Enemy

The environmental movement has built its entire moral architecture around one idea: that human activity is the problem, and reducing it is the solution.

Consume less. Shrink your footprint. Sustain what exists.

That frame feels humble. It feels responsible.

It is also, in the deepest geological sense, wrong.

Earth has been through five mass extinctions.

Not one was caused by humans.

They were caused by the universe … asteroids, supervolcanoes, gamma-ray bursts … operating on a schedule that doesn’t care about coral reefs or rainforests or anything else that has ever lived here.

The biosphere was already condemned before we arrived.

Static. Undefended. Running out of time on a cosmic clock.

What changed the equation isn’t that we learned to consume less.

It’s that we learned to think.

The same knowledge-creating engine that produced climate change also produced the satellite that detects it, the chemistry that explains it, and in 2022, the spacecraft that proved we can physically move celestial bodies off collision courses with Earth.

No other species in four billion years has done anything remotely like that.

Sustainability as a goal says: preserve what is.

But whatever exists has always been temporary. Always been fragile. Always been one geological event away from extinction.

The only thing that has ever interrupted that schedule is human intelligence.

We hurt the Earth getting here. That is true.

We are also the only thing in its entire history capable of saving it.

Both sentences are true at the same time.

The first one built the modern environmental movement.

The second one builds what comes next.

Earth was never going to make it.

We are why it might.
